What’s all the sweat about?
I wanted to take a moment and share with you something that we have been offering for several months now- our Infrared Sauna. After having seen the response from our patients that have been using it- for everything from skin conditions, to chronic pain, to anxiety, to post-concussion symptoms- we are confident in the power of “whole body hyperthermia,” or sauna use, to not only help you feel better, have clearer skin and a clear mind, but also to actually change your life.
There is an amazing study out of Finland; 2000 middle aged men were followed for 20 years. their daily habits were tracked- things like foods, exercise, smoking habits, and sauna use. Controlling for all of these variables, it was found that people using the sauna 4-7 times a week for at least 20 minutes a session had a 2/3 reduction in heart disease/stroke, Alzheimer’s, dementia, and something called “all-cause mortality,” or, literally, death from anything. I’m confident to say that if there was a pill or drug that could offer a 2/3 reduction in these horrific disease, that also cleared your skin and left you feeling relaxed and “zen,” it would be the best-selling drug in history.
Thankfully, with sauna use, there is no “middleman.” There is no practitioner to see, no pill to swallow, no side effect to worry about. As much as I am a huge fan of medicine in general- from western medicine, to massage therapy, and things like acupuncture and herbs- there is nothing like cutting out the middleman and getting healing from your own body’s response to sauna, which is a passive form of heat stress. This is true self healing- there is nothing external except the heat which triggers the cascade of benefits that accumulate over time, yet also leave you feeling refreshed and relaxed after each session.
I’m sure if you’re still reading, you’re probably wondering how sauna does all of these amazing things. There are many reasons that it works, and it works over such a wide range of body systems that I liken sauna use to something like sleep- it has such a beneficial effect over just about every organ system in the body, and you get it all by yourself- that it is probably the most powerful healing modality that doesn’t involve a practitioner working on you that I can imagine.
Sauna pulls heavy metals, plastic pollutants, and other environmental toxins literally right out of your body via sweating through the skin. The sweat that is analyzed post sauna use has been found to contain things like mercury, PCB’s, and phthalates like BPA. Sauna promotes the generation of what is called Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor, or BDNF, which is what your body uses to make new brain cells! Sauna has been shown to prevent muscle atrophy after an injury sidelines you from the gym or your athletic pursuits. Sauna reduces inflammation in the brain, which is helpful for brain injury recovery and depression (people suffering from depression have been found to also have higher levels of inflammation in the brain itself). It also flushes the muscles of the body with blood in a way very similar to full body exercise. Sauna promotes restful sleep, clarity of mind, and is virtually free of side effects, provided you re-hydrate during and after sessions.. Sauna does so much good for you, and is so generally safe for the vast majority of the population, that I do believe sauna is the ancient world’s greatest passive healing modality that has been passed down to the modern world.
So, come see what ancient and modern people have known for thousands of years about sauna use. If you are concerned about the high temperatures, don’t be- our sauna doesn’t heat up to 180 degrees like a regular Nordic style sauna. It is also a dry sauna, so you can read or simply meditate and rest if you’d like without worrying about water ruining your book or your phone. And because the temperature is much lower, it is safe for even cardiac patients (but of course, please check in with your doctor before use if you have heart issues).
I know this was a lot to read, but this story is just beginning. And if you haven’t had a chance to try our sauna, just mention this article and get $10 off your first session as a gift from me to you. I would love to see the world embrace sauna and always love seeing the bright complexions and cheerful smiles that everyone has post-sauna.
